As a personal trainer I have given out many weight loss tips over the years. One question I hear a lot from female clients is, "Will lifting weights make me get bulky?" In fact, many women steer clear of body building classes because they fear becoming too bulky. And some workouts (we won't mention any names) discourage women from lifting weights over 3lbs!
Granted, some people are genetically pre-disposed to building muscle quickly. However, unless you are lifting very heavy weights that you cannot perform more than eight repititions with a consistent basis, chances are you are not going to get bulky.
Lifting weights will help you lose weight and sculpt your body. It increases lean muscle mass, which raises your metabolism, helps your body burn more calories and gets you toned and defined. Just choose weights that you can perform 12-20 reps with.
Finally, losing weight without developing muscle tone leads to a condition, I see this a lot in NY. It's called "Skinny Fat". These are people who are thin, look okay in clothes, but once the clothes come off, are still soft around the edges. Sagging even. It ain't pretty!
Lifting weights is an easy remedy to tone, tighten and tuck, and trust me, they really won't make you bulky if you do them right!!!
