Fighting Fall Cravings

Summer is almost over, fall is just around the corner. For some of us, fall's cooler temperatures bring cravings for warm, filling, cozy comfort foods, especially rich sweets and dense carbohydrates. During this time our diet defenses can be weakened as we become nostalgic, reminiscing about our mothers home cooking.

There is scientific evidence to suggest that we are more prone to depression during the fall and winter months. A condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder or S.A.D., makes us more tired, moody and get this; more likely to crave carbohydrates!!!! Our bodies produce less serotonin (the body's pleasure hormone) during fall which can make it harder to have that "get up and go" feeling. Exercise is a great way to boost the body's serotonin levels and leave you feeling alert, sharp and focused.

For sugar cravings try to find healthy substitutes like choosing frozen yogurt instead of regular ice-cream. Maybe try exploring sweet tasting, seasonal, organic fruits. Apricots, apples and blueberries are all great fall choices.

For carbohydrate cravings try to opt for the multigrain or wholegrain variety which your body will process slower than the bleached, processed kind. They are a good source of fiber which is also good for your overall health. If you are likely to overdose on starchy foods, try sweet potatoes.

Indulging in a hearty, healthy soup can be a great way to feel full and reduce cravings for warm, salty foods. Gazpacho, vegetable and chicken soups are all tasty low calorie soups that will keep you satisfied while calming your cravings.

Finally, don't let the fall get you down. The new season can be the perfect time to reflect on your health goals, try something new and revitalize your fitness program.
